Energy is vital and is becoming increasingly precious in a world which will soon have 8 thousand million inhabitants. But electricity is commonplace and as it has no physical existence, it remains intangible in our everyday lives. This is one of the fascinating paradoxes faced by design in the field of energy. There is also one recurring question: how can we shape energy so that consume it more sensibly?

Within the Research and Development Department, the EDF Design team is working every day to make the most of the five cyclical qualities of design (formalisation, constructive criticism, mediation, soundly argued conviction and integration) both in their operational projects and their exploratory design studies.

In the field of energy, as elsewhere, now more than ever improving our lives means looking for more sustainable solutions. This means that we need to think very humbly about the concept of co-design work carried out by the active participants in society (private individuals, schools, business, institutions, etc.).

It is as though economic competition can only lead us to co-operation!
