Pecha Kucha volume 15

On February 1st 2011, at the Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie (Paris), the 15th edition of Pecha Kucha Paris explored the theme of energy. Organized as a part of the EDF Sustainable Design Challenge, with the support of the APCI and Pecha Kucha Paris, this event aimed to facilitate the exchange of creative initiatives that encourage a change in behaviour regarding energy consumption. .

This Pecha Kucha event showcased a selection of 12 projects that explore sustainable development solutions.

Each presentation revealed how design can transform energy users into catalysts for responsible energy consumption.

INCONSPICUOUS MATTER

"Inconspicuous Matter" is a research project aimed as developing a series of interactive materials which allow for the visualization of an electric current in a domestic environment. Considering textile material to be a sensory interface that allows for a richer and more intuitive communication than a simple screen, this project aims to materialize the immaterial, thus increasing awareness of our energy consumption. www.celinemarcq.com

ATRE ACTIF

This project uses a strong architectural concept to transform existing buildings. The objective is to preserve the presence of the living room as the symbolic heart of a habitat. “Atre actif” (or "active heart") limits the amount of space dedicated to domestic activities, thus reducing the amount of movement between rooms.

RADIO-CLIMAT

One of most remarkable impacts of climate change this century is the increase in temperatures and consequently the irreversible effect on European climate.

Radio-climate is a specially designed radio aimed and developing “a culture of climate risk”. The objective is to encourage listeners to listen to their local weather update via a podcast and to adapt their daily habits to the conditions of their area.

LED URBAIN

This project reverses the current logic surrounding public lighting. It refocuses lighting on pedestrians. This results in the efficient use of street lighting, a reduction in energy consumption and a lighting system focusing exclusively on pedestrians.

In parallel, the project envisages to improve road security by incorporating a powerful system of LED lighting in the tarmac which would warn motorists of oncoming bicycles or pedestrians.

GREEN YOUR CAMPUS

This project examines the open space of Nantes School of Design, offering possible solutions for students to limit their energy consumption. It also examines the creation of an autonomously powered area. The project reflects on infrastructure and furniture adapted to users needs.

Yannick Santini

ULTIMO

ULTIMO aims to optimize the movement of people and goods between Paris, Rouen and Le Havre. The concept includes a standardized cabin which can be adapted to various modes (train, cable car, car or boat). When the cabin is locked into place within the vehicle, one or two people can be transported with merchandise. Otherwise, a GPS system can guide the transportation of merchandise.

CAPTEUR DE COURANT BIO ELECTRIQUE

An increasing number of people purchase houseplants to become closer to nature and to purify the air in their household. This project aims to facilitate the management of variations in environmental conditions and also educate people on caring for their plants.

The project offers assistance in caring for houseplants, an examination of the atmospheric pollution of the habitat and a collaboration in order to increase the level of botanical knowledge.

2020 - CHAUFFAGE CENTRAL

The object presented is a single source of central heating which uses the heat and energy provided by a boiler. It aims to heat a new eco-concept home constructed in 2020, from the living room. A water-radiator is connected to a ventilation system which will be used in new dwellings from 2020.

During special occasions, families can gather around the heating system which resembles the idea of an open fire.

HALO, STATION AUTONOME

HALO V-2 is a free-powered station where members of the public create energy through physical activity (bicycle, rowing-machine). This energy simultaneously powers a show. Participants enter a capsule where they participate in an alternative spatial journey and are exposed to real-time images from the Earth’s surface.

KITLAMP

Kitlamp consists of street lighting which can evolve over time due to interchangeable modules placed on the top of a lamp-post. Different light-bulbs can be fitted onto the lamp-post (LED lightbulbs) and it can also be used for new technologies (Wi-Fi post).

The idea is to multiply the uses surrounding this light-source with the aim of providing lighting with more and more autonomous low-energy consuming technologies.

SUPER MARMITE

Super Marmite is a geo-localized social network which allows for the identification of home-prepared meals in your area. Those people who are preparing additional portions can offer them online in return for payment. As less people use their electrical appliances, this project helps to avoid waste and to promote the conservation of energy.
